Many people say it does. I tryied a lot of antivirus software and decided that Zone Alarm Suite is the best. It does use more RAM and CPU than the rest of the programs, but it's really good! And is not only antivirus, but it also has a great firewall. The only way to know if you will like it or not is to try it.
From here you can download some trials:

Try them and you'll see how good they are!

Technically, it's another layer that packets have to travel through. However, if you had to figure a percentage, it probably only impacts the speed by as little as 0.05%.

Seriously though, it doesn't have much impact. If your PC isn't quite up to date, however, it might be a bit of a drain on system resources causing the PC to run slower (not the connection).

And contrary to what the first guy said, it doesn't check for viruses. In fact, it's not checking the content of what passes through at all. Zonealarm and other personal firewalls look at the source and destination that packets travel to and from. Depending on the settings in place, it may or may not allow it to pass based on that.

Yes. Zone Alarm, if confingured to start with OS or when you connect to internet, nests in background as does virus protection software. If you have a P3 processor or better, ZA's activity is barely noticable until it catches something.

It depneds on you hardware. Actually ZoneAlarm checks all packets sent/received and hence there is an extra load on your system. If you have a large RAM and good CPU your PC will not be slow.
