Well if you are really playing cards it means that you are holding your cards in such a way that others can see them (maybe in the reflection of your glasses?)...
If they are referring to REAL LIFE or metaphorically, then it means that you are giving too much information to people who may use it to harm you or use it to "tip your hand" to others. If you are talking too much and there is a reason why you need to be less forthcoming, sometimes a friend may give you this advice to save you from exposing your true thoughts or emotions?
Not real sure, but in either case, it may be a good idea to consider that the person who said this to you is trying to protect you or help you to gain perspective about the people you THINK you can trust. (?) Maybe the person who said this to you knows something that you don't know? In either case good luck, and maybe you should reconsider some of the people that you have been talking to in reference to your difficulties or other issues?

The expression is actually "plays his cards close to the chest". Picture someone playing poker, holding the cards up close so no one can see them, and you get the idea. It means to be careful not to give away what your strengths and weaknesses are. It's similar to having a "poker face".
