You can get an external USB one..However, you may well need one day to boot from your CD drive & unless your computer (bios) supports booting from USB (which I doubt if it will) you are going to give yourself a huge headache if you need to reformat & reinstall windows for example. So I would get your "native" one replaced or fixed.

You can go out and spend some money and buy yourself a DVD+R/RW and CD-Burner combo external for $100. They usually plug into your USB port. I am hoping your laptop isn't too old, so you can use the drivers which might not support older operating systems like Windows 98.

You can do both!

If you search the net for laptop optical drives and external optical drives you can find both. There are varying prices for each recently I have looked for a HP internal drive and I've seen some around £30 and some around £100.

just take it out remove the power cable and the data cable from the cd/dvd do not remove the data cable that is on the from the motherboard just remove the data cable from the cd/dvd
thn buy a new one and put it back in the same way look to see how the data cable is on your old cd/dvd ..there is a pink line going down it you have to put the data cable back on the same way it is on the old cd/dvd its easy then just power up the pc and your new cd/dvd is set up you may have a driver cd to install the drivers & software that comes with your new
cd/dvd .. and that is easy to buy a all in 1 DVD+R/RW/burner save having 2 in lol

Try pcworld.com but yes to both questions best to replace the internal as it no longer is a laptop if you have cables going to external drives but cost wise external could be cheaper

How old is the machine. They have brand new ones that will be cheaper then replacing the CD\DVD unless your feeling froggy and want to do it yourself. The one drawback to laptops is there inability to be modified beyond a certain point.

You can use an external one or replace the internal one. Take it along to a Maplin store and ask them if they have a replacement. I think there is a store finder on their website.
