Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware. Try reinstalling your windows every 6 months. I do that with mine. In time, your computer acculumulates unwated viruses and spywares. Studies shows that anti-viral softwares misses 85% of the time, leaving these viruses all over your computer. The best thing to do is backup your important files and software, wipe your hard drive clean and reinstall windows.

You can get a popup blocker but that just blocks the sign of the problem but not eliminate it. AND! Use firefox rather than internet explorer.

If you have Internet Explorer as your browser click Tools at the top of your screen, put your cursor on Pop-up Blocker, a menu pops up, make sure Pop-up Blocker is turned on, click Pop-up Blocker Settings, a menu will pop up, go to the bottom and click the down arrow and select High Block all pop-ups, or at least Medium Block most automatic pop-ups. If you don't already have it you can also get Yahoo! Toolbar and also use the pop-up blocker on it.

If you are using Internet Explorer 6 you might should upgrade to Internet Explorer 7 Beta3 optimized by Yahoo!. I switched to it and I love it. Everything works great including Yahoo! Mail which almost everyone else is complaining about being slow. I can be reading my mail in about 10 seconds after I sign in. I will post the download link in case you are interested.

I also have Avant Browser and I think it is the best and fastest browser, but for Yahoo! Mail you can't beat Internet Explorer 7.

Sounds like another basic standard malfunction of rookie failure to install & USE ~ The 'Yahoo!ToolBar' download (free) WILL incorporate easy access to settings for popup blocking (free), features a 'built-in' CCleaner (free) to scan for 'issues' & 'clean' system for continuous, smooth operation. Used in conjunction with the 'Lavasoft AdAware SE Personal ' (free) program, the Windows XP (Home) will be fully functional with the Auto-Update & firewall settings configured.
It may be necessary to also run the Disk Defragmenter
[Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>DiskDefrag>HDD:(C drive)>(analyze)]
Don't panic, don't be embarrassed, we are all learnin to operate these complicated dang gadgets.

running anti-virus in windows does not assure a complete success of annihilating malicious programs. Bad News is YOU GOT ADWARES & SPYWARES in your PC!

Have someone by your side who knows DOS.

1. Download SuperDat( a free antivir update utility from McAfee)
usually ...SDATxxxx.exe. Follow instructions on how to extract it using dos prompt (type sdatxxxx.exe/?) xxxx- is the number beside sdat.

*To extract the files, type: sdatxxxx.exe /e c:\vscan
you should find the files in the folder c:\vscan

2. Once you have extracted the file. Boot your pc using a bootdisk. go to the folder where you extracted the virus scanner

3. On Dos prompt, type: scan /adl /program /clean

if you have a large capacity disk, do it at night and leave it to run overnight, it should be over by morning

download a more than one pop up remover,

adaware and spybot s&d are two good ones which are FREE.

also. if you swap brower to IE7 or Firefox then they have better blockers built in.

but firstly the removal tools then run them once each to get rid of the most of it and then be sensible in what you allow your pc to download, eg check your privacy settings.

if you want a virus scanner, avg is reliable and easy to use.

hope this helps

Even if you reinstall it now, it'll get worse in time, because it's the nature of the operating system;
the bext option is you switch to Mac OS X -which costs some- or to Linux OS, which costs nothing [walletwise]; Linux distros:
