I used to support my neices hocky team but its not a very lady like game is it. Its seems all cofrontation; hiting of the ankles, pulling down and out and out agression. Women should not play this sport.

I agree with you that women's field hockey is more violent that men's field hockey. Yes, there is a lot of hitting on ankles, pulling down...

It could be due to the fact that the women know that they couldn't cause that much damage. Or it could be that field hockey tends to attract women who are more aggressive or competitive that say ballet. Or it could be that men tend to be more directly confrontational, rather than resorting to 'dirty' tricks...

However, I do not agree that women should not play field hockey. If they want to, then they should play. May be you should ask your niece what she thinks of your idea. She might explain why she chooses to play field hockey, and you might appreciate her point of view.

omg, did you actually say: "it's not a very lady ilke game is it"??? where the .... did you get that idea? of course it isn't a lady like game, why should it be? hockey is perfect as it is and yeah there's a lot of sticking, tripping and fighting involved, but that just spices the game up, makes it even more worthwhile to wath (and play, i can tell you that). no fighting, no rough playing etc. just theatens it to become boring. hockey will never be boring, but it's better when it's played rough.
as for women's teams being more vicious then men's teams: that's true, but i don't know why. they say women have a stronger feeling for competition and such, so maybe there lies it's origin, but i wouldn't know for sure!
p.s. oh, by the way, i was talking about icehockey, not field hockey!!

Excuse me, please listen to someone who PLAYS ice hockey with women. It isn't all confrontation and hard hits to another players body. That would be football or rugby, not that I have any problems with those sports. But ice hockey is about skill, agility, balance, and power. You cannot play the game simply by decking someone into the boards. In the game agression is meant to be changed in determination. And even in the NHL seriously heavy hits don't happen as often as they did a decade ago. And there are refs who should keep the game under control. But as for being lady-like, it really shouldn't matter as long as your neice is having fun and enjoys the sport. And if women can't play this sport, then why can men play?

*All* women's sports are more vicious than men's sports - it's not just hockey. It has nothing to do with ability, or lack thereof, but how women interact with each other in general. We all tend to take things very personally, and we respond in an appropriate fashion to that. Obviously, you don't have sisters.

My classic example is basketball. Men's basketball is like flag football - it's all about the pretty pass, the sweet shot, and basically looking good. Women's basketball is like tackle football - it's all about grinding it out, playing physical, and doing what you have to to win. Which would you rather watch?

Hey, hockey is AWESOME for girls/women! I'll take a penalty when I have too.. but I don't think girl's are anywhere near as aggressive on the ice as the boys are (and that goes for women and men's hockey too)

Maybe you just witnessed a rowdy player?

It's DEFINITELY lady like!! I play it every day and love it, love it, love it !!!

I have nothing against women playing hockey1
My only problem is women do take things way too personal!
Just because you are a woman, doesn't mean I am not going to hit you if you are in my way!
Is it my fault I am 6 foot 3 and 230 pounds........If you do not like to get hit, then either get out of my way or do not play!
I have played against some very good female hockey players, clean and skilled....but most of the females I have played against.....get their goddamn sticks up in my face and high stick me all the time!
I had a game last night...I got highsticked in the head 3 bloody times from a female defensemen!
Yet if I even come close to them......"Wahhhh"...they go whining to the referee!
Just play the game.....
Have some fun along the way!

the problem with women's hockey is that body checking is not allowed - so therefore other methods are used to try to slow the play etc. Gosh - its a sport - if you can't handle something physical - don't watch. Women are excellent athletes and play hockey just fine. If you want to see aggression etc - watch broomball - its FULL Contact! LOL

women play the sport very differently than guys I think they feel they have to compensate for things but playing a dirtier more physical game at times than the men. Women are caddy as well they take things more on a personal level than the guys. Make things quite a bit different and brings an interesting dynamic to the game.
