Well, Latin is technically an "extinct" or "dead" language so I don't know who you'd be talking to LOL;-) I took Latin in University and ended up having to drop out. I'm pretty sure it was just the way the class was set up and the textbook we used (plus the insane workload!), but it was just too difficult for me..... and I've studied and excelled in other languages. If it's a true passion of yours, go for it! But I would advise taking a course instead of trying to do it on your own. My University course was designed to have you "fluent" in Latin by the end of the year, but usually with languages you need to be immersed in it to be able to speak it fluently in the shortest period of time. Latin is usually strictly memorization from a book. If you have an absurd amount of determination and will power, you could do well within 8 months or so. Ever think about taking Greek instead? Similar language and ppl still speak it. I had wanted to take Greek instead but they were only offering Latin that year=P

I took Latin in college. It is an immensely difficult language, and since it is no longer a spoken language, you might never speak it as it was originallly used. Writing might be a bit easier if you understand that the basic stem word consistently changes in ending, and these endings follow a basic pattern with some variables.
Latin will be helpful to you, particularly if you inend to bein a medical field profession. In general, i promise it will definitely excercize the ol' brain cells!
Good Luck!

that should just about do you. certainly, if you pick it up quickly and don't have problems with the tenses and/or declensions. i figure you could get pretty proficient in basic latin in 6 or so months (e.g. the 'puella est pulchra' kind of stuff). if you're looking to get more involved, that could take years, depending on how intense you intend to get.

i took it for three years in high school then a year of greek. (pretty useless on the whole, but i enjoyed it) thing is, i still retain a lot of it and can still half-assed translate a lot of church and vernacular latin.

good luck.

With that amount of studying, I wouldn't think it would take very long. 'Course, it depends on how interested you are, and how apt you are at that type of thing. Watch out that you don't overdo it and get sick of it, though.

it depends on how much you study and how dedicated you are, it seems like you really want to do this so i'll say a couple of years
