Man, who crawls on all fours as an infant, walks upright on two feet as an adult and walks with the aid of a cane as an elderly person. This is known as "the Riddle of the Sphinx".

Calling this one 'old' is a bit disingenuous. This is the Riddle of the Sphinx, from "Oedipus Tyrannus" (aka Oedipus Rex or Oedipus The King) which was written by Sophocles around 425 BC.

The question is posed to travellers by the sphinx and if they don't get the answer they forfeit their life. When Oedipus does get the answer right the sphinx kills herself.

This makes Oedipus the hero of the hour, and almost makes up for the fact that he was married to his own mother. I didn't even know he was from Norfolk in the first place.

Ok, I'm not the first person with the right answer,,, Man.. but I'll say why.
It's an ancient greek riddle.
In the morning of a man's life, before he learns to walk, he crawls on all fours.
Through the daytime of his life he walks, erect, unaided on two feet.
In the evening of his life, he needs a stick to walk, which is like a third leg.

Oops, just realised phantoms wife got in ahead of me. Ah well, she didn't mention the ancient greek bit, haha.
