Your first step is to become a weekend warrior. These are the cats that have day jobs and play venues on the weekends to augment their income and to be heard. The first step is to spend time in research. Find out what your competition is doing. If you are a guitar player, for example, find out what "library "of songs you'll need to play with the local acts, and what type of equipment you'll need. You have to have the fundamentals in place to get work. Nobody is going to hold your hand, they will expect you to be well-versed in the material they play, and have the necessary skills to pull it off.

Get it out of your mind and on the street. Just like your daytime job, there are certain things that you are expected to accomplish before getting a check. Music is no different. Start your research project this weekend, and you will be that much closer to your goal of a career in music. Don't go near a studio until you've put in the hours on the stage to perfect your chops. Many people make this mistake, and it's a great way to squander extremely expensive studio time.

I don't know what branch of music you are looking into, but I've found that it helps to look at all your possible money-making options. Do a search for local business that are looking for performers, list yourself on sites for bands looking for musicians, maybe consider teaching if you think that is something that works with your personality (trust me, it's not for everyone ;) I guess the best advice I have is have faith, make connections, be professional and remember that everyone you meet could be an important part of your network.

Best of luck!

Follow the Yellow Brick Road! My passion is teaching, your passion is music, your next-door neighbor's passion may be collecting antiques.

Every musician or songwriter cannot become a Bob Dylan, Santana, Jim Morrison, Johnny Cash, Janis Joplin, or Patsy Cline. If you want to play, you will play anywhere you can get a "gig". You will be committed, "no matter what".
