What different motivations do these values provide?

Well, WoW is still a game, but set up like a virtual society. You have your point system and lvl system just like a game. the higher the lvl, the better combat options you have, the harder the enemies, ect... The money motivates you to actually go out and either learn skills or kill certain creatures so you can attain better equipment. Just like the real world, others have what we want, so currency will almost always be involved. In the gaming world and real world, more money and higher lvls means you have better stuff.
