Depends where you are. You can do it in England by deed poll for £34 (about 65) plus postage. http://www.ukdps.co.uk/

While you're supposed to change your name (in the USA) in the court of your domicile, a deed poll might well be accepted anyway.

But since you don't need a lawyer (you can go to the county court house law library or perhaps even public library, copy a form of petition and order, print it out, fill it in and take it to the court) it shouldn't cost more than the filing fee. What can that be? $50 or less?
