I was looking at my hands today, and like never before I noticed the color of the thin veins that ran from my fingers to my upper arm. Everybody has green veins, but I really never pondered on why the veins are green. After closely examining my veins for almost 30 mins, I still could not say why the veins appear green. This was mainly because every gory image of cut skin or flesh that I have seen on TV or pictures did not show green veins. So please help understand why our veins appear green .

In the light, blood appears red because most colors are absorbed except for red, which bounces back from the blood. Every color but red is absorbed by the oxygen, carrying pigment hemoglobin (Hb). If a filter that blocks the reflected color is positioned between the blood and the eyes of the person watching, the perceived color changes. In the case of humans, the skin serves as a filter for the color red, and the remaining color ends up being green. The exact color spectra is determined by the relative levels of oxygenated iron (HbO) and CO2 in the blood. High oxygen reflects red and high CO2 reflects blue, which mixed with the yellowish color of the fat and/or skin ends up showing as green.

~Dirty needles.
Or, you need a shower. Real bad. Or maybe an optometrist. And most definitely a little less of the stuff you were on when you spent 30 minutes contemplating your veins.

They may appear green to you, but they are actually blue. Blood that is going to your lungs has no oxygen in it therefore is blue. When it is leaving you lungs, it is oxygenated therefore is red.
