Alright...Bengals, Steelers, Panthers, Colts...

Well, the Steelers are coming off of a Superbowl winning season and their momentum will come full circle once the regular season starts up. Big Ben is playing like he should, and minus The Bus, they managed to keep most of their starting lineup from last year...Minus The Bus. Now Jerome Bettis wasn't an every down back last year, but he did have something that the Steelers now lack. The ability to punch it in for short yardage situations. Bettis didn't have many yards, but he did lead in terms of rushing touchdowns. He could move the pile. Now the load is placed on Walker, who at heart is more of a scatback, not a punishing runner. They still have some targets, but without The Bus, they definitely aren't the same team.

The Colts had arguably the best team last year. They had the Dolphins of yesteryear clinging to their seats and their uncontested perfect season title. However with the unfortunance of Dungy's son they declined in the end of the year only to repeat the case of not being able to win when it counts...the play-offs.
The Colts lost Ederin James to the Cardinals in the off season and have yet to find a solid replacement for him. If this keeps up defenses can expect Manning to do more with his arm, allowing them to become somewhat one dimensional. This can spell disaster...

The Panthers have an interesting situation. Their defense is still one of the most dominating, while on the offensive side of the ball Steve Smith has emerged as one of the leagues top recievers. Combine that with a decent running game and you have a formula for sucess...or something like it. They are still suspect however, with a series of injuries in the running back position that makes for a frusterating winter rush.

Now the Bengals...their biggest question mark was Carson Palmer and his return. Well needless to say...He's Back. With the stats that he put up in the first half of that preseason game, he has shown why he is one of the best in the league. The Bengals possess one of the more potent offenses in the game with a good recieving corp featuring Chad Johnson, and a running game featuring Rudi Johnson. The defense is stout enough to get the job done and force turnovers all the while.

Ultimately, best and worst really can't be determined because of all the problems that may occur during the season (ie. injuries...). But if all the teams listed stay healthy and perform to their prime I would list them as follows:

1) Bengals (most solid)
2) Steelers (superbowl champs...)
3) Colts (Manning to Harrison...)
4) Panthers (Suspect...)

4. Pittsburgh Steelers- I'm not too crazy about their roster this season. The Steelers live and die by the running game, and I'm just not so sure they'll have enough strength there to win. Willie Parker is a fine back, but I severely doubt he'll hold up all season. Same goes for Duce Staley. The O-line, though solid, has some weaknesses. Hines Ward has been injured all preseason, and I think it'll hamper him all season. If Ward struggles, the Pitt passing game is non-existant. But defense has always been where the Steelers win, so what's it matter how their offense looks? Well, they'll still win a few games they shouldn't win thanks to their D, but not as many as you'd think. The corners on this team are horrible, and though their zone blitzing scheme does take some pressure off them, good passing teams like the Colts can exploit this flaw. This is still a good team, 11 or 12 wins should come their way, but I just don't think they're as good as any of the other teams you listed.

3. Indianapolis Colts- Manning. Harrison. James. Wait... For so long, the Colts Triplets were the core of the most feared offense in the league. Defenses were lost against them, completely unable to neutralize all three threats at once. If you keyed on stopping the passing game, James would rip you apart. If you loaded up to stop James, Manning and Harrison would kill you. But now, no more James, no more endless headache for defenses. The Colts still have a very impressive offense, but Addai and Rhodes are nowhere near the same level as James. Not just in rushing either, James was an excellent blocker and pass catcher, you could use him in any situation, which made it impossible for defenses to guess what the Colts would do. Now that that versatility is gone, the Colts are going to take a step back. That, and their defense still sucks.

2. Cincinnati Bengals- Easily the best offense in the league. They can outscore anyone. The problem is, their defense is bad. The D is a very small unit by NFL standards, and they just don't match up against big, power running offenses. That'd be fine if the D shut down opposing passing games, but that's just no the case. The secondary isn't very talented, and the Bengals try to compensate for this by creating turnovers instead of worrying about tight coverage. It works against alot of teams, but an elite QB can shred that approach apart. The D is good enough to beat bad teams, maybe even average ones, but come playoff time, it's just not good enough.

1. Carolina Panthers- This might seem a little surprising, given the quality of the other teams you listed, but for my money, the Panthers are the best team in the league. The defense rivals Chicago in terms of talent, it can shut down any offense in the league. No one questions that though, critics point to the offense as the Panthers downfall. I don't see why. It's not as if we're talking about the Bears here, the Panthers have an offense that, while nowhere near the leagues best, can certainly put some points on the board. Steve Smith is the kind of offensive weapon most teams dream of having. Delhomme is nothing spectacular, but he's definitely above average. The O-line is a very good group. Adding Keyshawn Johnson gives them a decent second WR option. While I'm not sold on Deshaun Foster at RB, he can still be productive. And if not, they've got a very talented rookie in DeAngelo Williams, who I'm sure can step right in there and improve the offense. Last, but not least, this team is extremely well coached. John Fox has given this team and excellent winning attitude, and he gets absolutely everything out of his players. All in all, I think this is the best all around team in the league.

I don't really know the Panthers so can't really rate them. Now if you mean FULL Season including playoffs that is how I am rating them.

1 Steelers(biased as a fan otherwise could flip 1&2)
2 Bengals(not sure if the Steelers or Bengals are really better I say even)
3 Panthers(don't really know them)
4 Colts (they can't win with Manning when it comes to the big games)

1. Pitt- great D, great linemen, impact players at every position.
2. Carolina- Mirror image of the Steelers- same type of team.
3. Indy - I'm not a fan of teams that rely on out shooting their opponents, the Bengals and Colts are both like this. They don't have that fearsome D like Pitt and Car.
4. Bengals - Same as above.

Championships are won with D
