I was asked to send a "digital copy" of a letter today. Does it just mean a soft copy? Please help. Thanks.

If you have a letter on paper, scan it and send it to them!

It means just what it says. A digital copy of a document is scanning it in and converting it from RAW data such as handwriting to digital data like a bitmap of the document. This can now be sent faster then lets say a fax which is trying to analyze a fine line each time it crosses the document and then transmitting it to be reconstructed on the other end. An easier example to understand would be music on tape being recorded and digitally stored instead of analog.

DIGITAL COPY of a document is technically and grammatically incorrect.

A document on paper whether original or copy can never be defined as DIGITAL or ANALOG. It may be copied from a DIGITAL COPIER. But the copy is not DIGITAL.

And it it indicates the soft form only then its not a copy of a document. Its the scanned image of the document or the raw file of the document - neither way its a copy.

It means to send it via email, instead of a fax or snail mail.
