Whenever i run a virus scan, my pc shuts down. It is also very loud... there is a loud humming sound that comes from the CPU and i can even hear it from outside my room. When i restart, it does a disc scan and all that stuff and runs normal for a while... it also does this when i try to convert music or even sits idle for some time... I sent this pc back to the manufacturer before for this same problem... they fixed something, sent it back, and it happened all over again...Do i need to replace some hardware or is there a software fix for my problem, or am i just better off junking this piece of ****... What a waste of 2500 from shop NBC...

First of all your CPU(central processing unit) shouldn't be humming. If it is then theres something terribly wrong. The fan that cools it might be humming and can be replaced easily. Most of the time the loudest thing in your computer case is the hard drive. Make sure you identify whats making the noise. Perhaps your fan is broken. If the fans broken and your CPU gets too hot theres a thermostat in your CPU that automatically throttles it down and sometimes shuts off your computer. In anycase it's not good to be running your computer hot. Most motherboards have methods to check CPU heat, but each motherboard is different.

It could be overheating, or there is something wrong with the hard drive.

Check the BIOS right after it happens and you turn it back on. See what the CPU temp and case temp is reading. Most CPUs should be running at well under 60°C, and the case temp should be lower, closer to the 45-50°C range.

If it's not that, I would try running Windows XP in safe mode to see if the same thing occurs there. You can also check the system event logs. Here's how:

Problem may be due to conflicting Virus prptection programs... if you installed third party virus protection and did not disabe virus protection in the BIOS (setup menu) then this is a good cause to system shut down.

It actually sounds like hardware to me, I would be backing it up and running diagnostics for an extended run. I wouldn't trust the disk drive as far as I could throw it....I would also make sure the backups are correct also as we know garbage in, garbage out.

1, About the shutdown when you run a virus scan, this is a virus called brontok,
download a removal tool from
http://wirusy.antivirenkit.pl/en/szczepionki/Brontok.html

or visit
http://searchg.symantec.com/search?q=Rontokbro&context=gbh&src=gbh&output=xml_no_dtd&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&client=symc_en_US&proxystylesheet=symc_en_US&site=symc_en_US
to get more information

if it still shuts down, then take your harddisk to another computer which is not infected, and scan/clean it, then return it to your PC.

2. About the loud sound, its a problem with your fans, you must take them out, clean them from dust, oil them then return, or you can simply purchase new ones?

When you boot up your computer, hold down the F8 key immediately until you get a boot menu. Select "Safe mode".

When you are in, run the virus scanner then.
