Well, as an author who has had her novel picked up by, but then not published by said publishing house, I do not know that I would necessarily be the one to give the most astute advice! Nonetheless, having had at least gotten a publishing house to entertain my novel is more than most people ever get, and hell, at least I got the advance check! I cannot tell you how many times I have begun with a certain idea and evolved it, nor can I ever tell you that any idea you have may be a wrong one. For me, it was the outpouring of all my thoughts, and going back with a clarity I found only after I had put down all my ideas (and examining them with thoughtful recollection) to review how I might piece them all together that I found my first chapter emerge. The same with the second, the third- until I found my momentum and my novel was finished. In my opinion, keep everything and then find your way eventually. The editors are going to ultimately decide your clarity in direction if you have something worth working toward.

I've encountered that problem frequently in the past, the thing that strongly works for me is planning:
1) I outline my whole story with a decent level of detail
2) I tweak that outline until it pleases me
3) I start writing, if an interesting idea comes to me during the process of writing I try to put it in
4) you've finished the first draft, now revise
5) pat yourself on the back you've just wrote a book
Things are hardly that easy but it the way things go for me

Think of an idea for your book and stick to it! Thats the only way you're going to solve your problem! Have you been studying anything to write books? If not you should go study. They will teach you how to write a book and everything you'll need to know. Also if you have a problem with writing a book they can help you to solve this problem too.
Good luck!

The best way to write a book is to have a general outline of what happens and then write the start last. That way you can put in information which might not seem relevant at the time but will ultimately aid to the major theme of the story.

Don't edit so much before you finish the story. It's a first draft. It will probably suck. But that's what editing and revision is for... after the story is done. There's always the second draft.. and the third..and fourth, etc. But just finish it first. Get it out of your head so you can look at what you've got.
Think of that story as a big lump of coal sitting in your bowels. Sh*t out that lump of coal. Then you can clean it and polish it up and turn it into something.
