For Boston, the T (subway) is probably best. The subway has stops near most everything you'd want to see.

For Lexington (and Concord), you probably want to have a car, but can "rough" it if you want via bus, etc (check MBTA.com)

Myself, I've always driven to Lexington. But was fine walking, taking the T, or biking in Boston.

Directly in Boston you can use the train (the T) but if you want to go to Lexington there are some T Buses but you might want to rent a car because the buses can be tricky- odd times, drop offs, etc and Lexington is pretty big for a suburb. You'll love it once you're there though, it's so pretty. Have fun!

Dont drive, the roads are always busy. Use public transport, it goes pretty much everywhere.
