I always use a filtration system rated for a larger tank. It will move more water and can disturb some fish that like less water movement. It has not bothered any of my fish. I also prefer to have more than one filtration system. Then I can alternately clean one filter and then the other. This minimizes mini cycles.

When use a 30 gallon filtration system in a 10 gallon aquarium -You have a great chance of getting your fish stuck to the filtration intake.

It really depends on the fish. Larger fish can easily handle filters of up to 20 gallons per hour/gallon of tank water, but in most cases you don't want to go over 10 g.p.h per gallon of tank water.

If you can fit it in, or hang it on, yes....

I've never heard of any problems with OVERFILTERING a system. Usually, it's underfiltering that causes a lot of problems.

Anyway, if you're typical, it's only a matter of time before you're trading in that 10-gallon tank (or using it as a quarantine unit) for a bigger one....because there's so many really gorgeous fish, and you *just have to have* that one....and that one....

It's almost as bad as having cats! (g)

Yes, I had to do that just last week because my old filtering system (for the suitable amount of water of my tank) collapsed again. That happened twice a month and I got upset with the tank and the filter. I decided to buy a bigger one and so far, it seems it works much much better.
Hope it helps!!

well, you could try it. If u have a 10 gal. then the filter might be too powerful and could cause stress to your fish.
