So, I think it would be wiser and less expensive to rent a car in Mexico.

i dont know any rental agencies that will rent to drive to Mexico. Mexican officials wont let a rental car in the country due to selling the cars. I just checked with google US state dept. Mexico counsler of affairs only owner of car can bring auto in to mexico. Infromation pulled up on google
