You can take this in the biblical sense, as in the apocalypse or armageddon, or as in an asteriod or biological plague for example, wiping 90% of us out. Even if 5 nuclear bombs go off, Id say that qualifies, even though of course there will still be people somewhere on earth.

kel: I just said that there would surely be people left, even if we do blow ourselves up, or a plague kills 90% of us.

my world probably will unless i live to be very very old. But the world die? Not a chance. Even if all the people were wiped out the world would still exist and in a few million years there would be another dominate species. But even the human race will not die out in its entirety in that period of time; shite happens but we move on.

Less than that.
Two words: Peak Oil. Seriously. Check out the link in the source. Please.
the following is mostly what I think is going to happen:
As China is becoming more and more industrialised their consumption is growing exponentially, and the U.S consumption will only increase as well. Problem is is there's only so much that can be produced. Supply and demand will make prices go nuts. 20$ a gallon nuts. What happens? War for oil. What do you think Iraq is really about? Installing a base of operations in the region with therichest oil deposits. China goes to Russia for oil because of proximity (maybe common communism too) and also because russia has LOTS of oil and they hardly use any because they are so poor. But with high oil prices, China makes Russia rich by buying all their oil. Russia becomes a superpower again. China and Russia make teams. World War 3 ensues, nuclear fire rains from the sky, shortly after the ashes fall like snow in the beginning of a nuclear winter. And the planet won't live through that.

If you believe the current prophets, they have a strong case that it will not last even that long.
However, how long do you expect to live? Is not, the end of your life really the issue. That is what we must be more concerned about. Anyone of us could die in some way in the next few minutes.
The point is what are you doing with your life? We need to make sure that we are focused on doing good things with our lives and not wasting it. If we live responsible lives that helps other people and tries to build good friends and family that is more important that how long the world may last. People are too caught up in panic issues and are missing the important issues in our lives. We should be reaching out in love to others and doing a good deed many times a day if possible.

Whenever it is, it IS coming. In my opinion soon not now per say but also not in 7 million years. I think that we're close. 200-300 years may sound far but it's really not. I think that's about the time that the world could come to an end, if we're able to last that long that is.

If the world will stop putting the most foolish people they can find to lead the countries, I think we can live another hundred million years. We have the technology to destroy ourselves, but we also have the technology to survive.
I won't mention names, but I can count the first 10 leaders who are unqualified to lead their country

the world as we know it today? yes. this planet has gone through many catastrophic events, from impacts to pandemics. they happened in the past and will happen in the future and life has always survived even though the human species might not.

I don't necessarily think it'll happen in the next 100 years, but I can seriously imagine (unfortunately) it happening within the next several hundred years. :( Not that we're beyond hope, but there need to be a lot of changes and improvements!!
