Well, we have to tread the middle path... and its a very fine line, so a slight mistake could land you in the pit of doom!!!
Now, to be clearer.. Its actually better to be neutral to a great extent... If you take sides, you are bound to suffer... Cos Mother-in-Law and Daughter-In-Law is such a realtion that there is never any consensus between both the parties on any thing.. In case of a dispute, both of them thnk that she is right and the other is wrong and expect the man to agree with her The Poor man becomes helpless!!!
I have faced this situation many times........
At first i used to agree with the one who is right, without any bias towards anyone... But i did not point out who was wrong in front of the other one, i used to explain the shortcoming of the wrong one to her seperately and then let them make up on thier own.... But generally after some time, the differences between MIL and DIL become bigger and then the man's opnion counts only when its in your(DIL or MIL, either) favor!! And same happened here too........ So i started to avoid being a part of any confrontations between these two.... And unless its really necessary to agree with either of the two, i try to be neutral.. And believe me, life has been much better this way!!!

Once you leave the nest it's best to do with your spouse. Of course if there's a major problem - with mothers wisdom you can get suggestions.
But the two will conflict big time.
Cutting the umbilical cord.

This is true because your own mother knows more than yourself does and if you go by your wife, your wife would just say what she would want. Not what your own mother knows for you.
