About why we like to interact with other people over internet: my educated guess is that it's just the social need inside us which makes us crave for interaction with other people. We enjoy enormously if we are recognized by other persons. The internet provides us means to fulfill this need in a safe way: we can keep the distance to those other people. We don't need to reveal anything we don't want to these strangers, and this way they can't hurt us. BUT we still have at least the illusion of being respected and noticed by others. So basically we can get social interaction without facing the fears related to it. And most of us have those fears, until we learn to overcome them.
About why we sit in front of computers, then that's another story and would require us to ponder modern information society and the effect automatic data processing has had in our daily lives. I'm not going into that here, because I don't think that's what you were after.

I am standing in front of my computer
and talking WITH people I do not know.
Therefore, this is one erudite that cannot
answer your question.
So very, very sorry.
Perhaps next time around,
when I'm sitting down?
Have a wonderful day.

It feels good, it's safe, and its interactive, unlike watching TV or reading, and you can sit here and get drunk, stoned or sit in your shorts and act like the coolest guy in town....or whatever....we can switch gears at the drop of a hat....one minute be consumed by anger at what some turkey said about this or that, the next minute watching people have sex if we like that....its amazing...never happeded when I was a kid....we only had one channel on TV for a while...I wonder why there are so few questions here about Anthropology? It was may favorite subject and easiest of course in first year University...We studied Jane Goodall and her studies of Apes in Africa...

Speaking only for myself.... I was only hoping to see someone use the word "erudite" in a sentence.
Now, at last, I can sell my computer and go back to living.

is there something wrong with talking to people that you dont know? how would anyone ever meet new people if they didnt talk to strangers?
talking to new and unfamiliar people is an excellent way to broaden your mind, and learn about new things, get new perspectives on ideas, etc
