October is a great time to head to Disney... you will have no problem with lines or heat!! You picked one of the best times to come down to Florida! They are starting a new thing there called Wishes... it sounds really neat. The only bad thing is that Cinderella's Castle is going to be under construction to remove all of the 50th anniversary decorations, but you'll still have a wonderful time!
If you want to go to Universal for the day there are many taxi companies that will offer to take you there. I highly recommend Bethany Transport.... they will drop you up/pick you up at the time and place you request and their prices are very reasonable. It also depends on the type of transportation you need. They have cars, vans, etc. depending on the size of your party. Very professional. Their number is 407-239-8111.
If you are driving yourself, get on I-4 and head east, then get off on the Universal Studios exit, 75A or B will get you there! You can't miss it!
PS. I think someone confused MGM with Universal in their answer. You definitely cannot take a Disney bus or any other Disney Transportation to Universal Studios. The monorail on Disney property will only take you to and from the Magic Kingdom and EPCOT, and to the Polynesian, Contemporary and Grand Floridian resorts!
Now, from EPCOT you can take a boat to MGM, or a Disney bus. You can also take a bus to any park from any park!

October is a great time to go. The weather will still be warm and the crowds shouldn't be too bad. I've been at the beginning of November and it was perfect. I was only a kid then and I don't recall the lines being bad at all, and of course, usually kids are very impatient with any lines. lol The only line I remember always being way too long is the line for the Peter Pan ride.
As for traveling to Universal Studios, there may be some shuttle services, but I'm not sure. I'd suggest taking a taxi. It's much quicker and much cooler on a hot day. Plus, it's not crowded. There's always taxis just waiting in the Disney Resort parking lots, so just pick one. We took a taxi to Cirque du Soleil at Downtown Disney because we were running late and the bus was taking forever. The taxi got us there in less than 10 minutes. It would've taken AT LEAST 20 minutes to get there on one of the buses, concidering all the other stops they have to make at other Resorts, and the other stops at Downtown Disney (Marketplace and Pleasure Island.)
Have fun!
P.S. Disney's Year of a Million Dreams Celebration begins October 1st, so there's going to be all kinds of fun, new stuff to do! New attractions, new shows, and more!

There are no Disney buses that take you to and from Universal Studios. You will have to find transportation from a cab or some other type service or take your car. We frequently go to Universal from Disney. We drive. We buy the 2 park one day pass and visit both the Studios and Islands of Adventure. You are not mistaking Universal for MGM are you? MGM is a park in the Disney family and you do take a bus to get there.
October is a great month. Traditionally the time Disney starts their new promotions. The weather is nice and crowds are small

October is a great month to visit Orlando! Kids are back in school and the weather begins to cool down a bit. Still... avoid weekends. That's when the locals bring the kids to play. So aim for weekdays when you visit the parks.. like Mondays or Tuesdays.
From your Disney Resort, follow signs to the I-4 and head north west, toward Sea World. Then take the exit that reads for Universal City Walk and Universal Studios. It's only about a 20 minute drive north from you.

I think October would be a good time because all the kids are in school.. You won't have to deal with those long lines. It won't be so hot either... There are free buses that go from Disney or your hotel to Universal. Also from all of the Disney Resorts.. Better yet, if you are at Disney just jump on the the train at disney (the monteral) its the one that runs all around disney and thru the Contempary Hotel. It will take you there also for free.. Visit Universal and ride it back to Disney or your Disney Resort Hotel. Once you get there you will see it will be very easy

less people at disney, weather is nice, but parks close early and have no fireworks. Call for a cab to go to universal. At night universal has an intense halloween thing which could cause crowds

My daughter works at Epcot, she says that the longest line she has stood in (on her off days) is only about 20 min. Also they have fast pass lines where you have you tickets scanned ,it will give you a time to come back to that ride and then you go to the front of the lines. She said it really isn't that bad. I am not sure about your second question though. But have a great time! And if you go to Epcot, at one of the ice cream stands, and you see an Amanda, tell her her mom says hi! LOL

You should also know that in the month of October the Magic Kingdom has Mickey's not so scary Halloween at night after hours. It is an extra fee, but the lines for rides are very short.
