This is a tired and cloned question. It has been asked and answered on Y!A many, many, many times. Are we to seriously believe that everyone deep inside does NOT ALREADY "know", or at least has a very strong conviction of, what their answer already is? Am I suppose do believe that someone out there is actually wondering which way they feel? I've never seen an ANSWER resembling that, people don't Answer questions with, "Well, gee, ya know, I really don't have an opinion on that..."
It's always cut and dried, whatever which way they happen to believe. It's almost as if some people are just trying to cause trouble.

Have you even considered that there is more that one type of homosexual? Do you think that tank-like dykes and total flaming fairies can be anything but genetic? But what about the straight looking straight acting guys that don't show up on "gaydar" but were totally ignored by their fathers and end up sausage suckers? hmm? How about totally hot feminine chicks who could be supermodels but would rather munch carpet than settle down with superman. What about identical twins where one is totally straight and homophobic and the other is queer as a Mint Julep? How did that happen? Part of being open minded is realizing that there isn't just one answer to any one question.
By the way, for anyone wondering. I'm gay. My identical twin brother is hopelessly straight. This does not prove that I made a choice to be gay. I didn't as a matter of fact. I have chosen to not participate in my Homosexuality. I am celibate and a virgin. I choose to be Straight. However biology has over ridden my choice and my lusts don't agree with my intellect so I boycott sex altogether. If you don't understand what an Identical twin is it's a single person concived with ONE sperm and ONE egg. It is ONE person. Later in the very early development of the embryo, something goes wrong and it splits and TWO people happen. So it must have been my choice then right? NOPE. How would that work anway? Somewhere around 8-11 years old, without ever knowing what homosexuality is, did I suddenly decide to like boys even though I have seen ample evidence that boys like girls when they get older? See, it's not so easy. It's not just one answer.

The recent studies indicate genes have nothing to do with this lifestyle choice. The evidence put forth is there are twins where one straight-one gay. Same genes. The latest research is looking into how the levels of testosterone before birth may have the biggest influence later in life. A gay/straight person because of hormone levels.

What makes straight people the way they are? Now for all of you thinking that is a stupid-*** question, you now have a glimpse of how homosexuals feel about it when someone asks a question like this. I'm sure most of you would answer something like that is just the way things are. Unfortunately, at this time in history, you are correct. Luckily, times change. I often wonder how any person could be so ignorant to think someone would choose to have sex with someone and risk being thrown out of their house, dis-owned by their family, harassed at school and work, discriminated against by their government, beaten up by intolerant morons, or worse yet, strapped to a fence, pistol-whipped, and left to die? Ask that same person why they have sex with someone, and they look at you like you have carrots growing out of your ears. Bigotry by any other name is still called Ignorance.

It is obvious that some gay people are born that way. Some people are born with sex organs that can't be identified as male or female and society has to "assign" a sex to them.
The brain chemistry of homosexuals is different than that of heterosexual people.
I also be live that some people, particularly women who have been beaten by men, choose the homosexual lifestyle. But I think most are born that way.
BTW I agree with some of the answerers that "Gay" is not a good word to use to mean a homosexual. Let's allow gay to mean what it used to.

I'm gay and I just don't know why I am gay. I've always been gay (I'm 65). I did not choose to be gay. I do not want to change. I have a brother and a sister. Neither of them is gay - so that knocks the family/influences stuff over. Genes? Who knows? Who cares?

i often wondered this question,im stright, but had gay friends(i moved),and theyall said they were born that way,so i have to belive them, but if you look at the human timeline, homosexuality has been with us since we started writing, its in the animal world, and "IF"we came from apes or a speices like apes, they most likley didit then,i think the award goes to the genes, something imbeded that doesnt affect everone, because how also do you explain bi-sexuals.....i dont belive you just wake up one day and your gay...i have friends who thinks this.......anyways.......i think it is genetics

I believe that "gays" as you put it are who they are the same way heterosexual people exist. By genetics, nature, influences and choice. You have to choose to have sex.

we see this question many times a day...every day. of course, the homophobes refuse to believe that it can possibly be genetic. they think we chose it. they think we had to have had a gay parent. or were abused/molested/raped. or had gay "influences" growing up. well, I'm here to tell you that in my case, and in the case of all my gay/lesbian friends, all of the "reasons" are a load of crap.
I was born to hetero parents, was not molested/abused/raped, didn't know anyone openly gay growing up and never even met anyone openly gay until long after I realized I was lesbian. I never woke up one day and decided, "hmm, I think I'll be a lesbian."
and as I continue to ask those hateful homophobes every time...when did YOU chose to be straight?
