16x is as fast as it gets for "single-layer" DVDs. This is the max rotational speed a drive can handle without risk of the DVD exploding.

Even though CD speeds go up to 52x, don't let that confuse you. The "x" in a CD speed rating is not the same as the "x" in a DVD rating. 52x CD is still a lot slower than even 4x DVD.

They go up to 16X but even though the 16X disc are twice as expensive as 8X there is almost no time savings (maybe 2 minutes)
8X will burn a full DVD in about 8 minutes, 4X in about 14.5 minutes.
I have bought 100 - 8X for $22.00 delivered price
Check http://www.pricewatch.com
For a first classDVD/CD burner check Pioneer DVR-111 at $38.00 delivered also at pricewatch
