What is the best way to tell your parents that you lost your retainer? I know this question is stupid, but I accidently left my retainer at the food court at the mall today, and I'm not sure how to tell my parents. I've had my retainer for about 3 months, and it's about $180 to replace. I have never lost it before, nor anything valuable before. The thing is, I recently went back-to-school shopping and I spent quite a bit. I'm pretty sure my parents are kind of in a financial bind right now, and the last thing I want to be is a burden to them and make them mad. Should I dive into my measly savings and give it to them? What do I do? Please help.

I know this question is stupid, but I accidently left my retainer at the food court at the mall today, and I'm not sure how to tell my parents. I've had my retainer for about 3 months, and it's about $180 to replace, maybe more. I have never lost it before, nor anything valuable before. The thing is, I recently went back-to-school shopping and I spent quite a bit. I'm pretty sure my parents are kind of in a financial bind right now, and the last thing I want to be is a burden to them and make them mad. I've also been trying to show them that I'm a mature, responsible person, but this situation could possibly affect the responsibility factor. Should I dive into my measly savings and give it to them? What do I do? Please help.

Mom, Dad, please let me finish before you start speaking. It is really important that you hear me out before jumping to conclusions.

I have spent a lot of time trying to figure out the best way to tell you this and I have decided that the only way to do it is to simply say it. (No, I'm not pregnant---joking! Don't say that part).

Anyway, continue on; I have lost my retainer. I know it was very expensive and I want to know what you think I can do to help get another one. I have some savings to contribute, but Is there anything I can do to earn some money around the house or in the yard...

I feel real bad that you would have to take the hit on this and I would feel better if I could contribute in some way, if not all the way.

I'm sorry.

Do it quick like taking off a band-aid!!! Less painful for you. I was always loosing my retainer but really only misplacing it cause I always recovered. I remember working at their restaurant one of the kids lost theirs and it was in the trash (with all the food and cigarette ashes and crud on top....at the bottom.......I know gross!!!) But be honest let them know maybe it's in the lost or found or something (like you'd want that back...LOL), it sounds like they might understand this one time since you haven't lost it in the 3 months since you've had it, and you said you haven't lost anything that valuable before....But remember be honest and quick (don't beat around the bush. Also for your nest retainer get a string or something similar and loop it through the case if possible and then tie it to something in your purse or bag or to your pants loop and that way it makes it harder to loose.....GOOD LUCK!!!!

I would just tell them straight out - I would tell them that you were afraid to tell them because you know how irresponsible it was and that you would like to help pay for the replacement and offer your money and time to help cover the costs. I would be impressed by you honesty and the fact that you are taking responsibility for your mistake. I have a 15 year old daughter and yes i would be upset that she lost it, but I would be more upset if she tried to hide the mistake from me.

Be honest about it -- tell them where you lost it, and OFFER to pay the costs for replacement -- especially since you were spending money with back to school shopping (and I am sure it was your parents' money -- am I right?). They will appreciate the HONESTY and the willingness to take responsibility for the loss.

By doing this -- you are preparing yourself for ADULT Life -- and an Adult takes financial responsibility when they lose things.

ok. tell your parents you'll work off the money, scrap into savings, or tell them staight up that you took it off during food eating, and you forgot it, or make up something like you took it off to eat and you threw it away with your food, whatever you tell them im sure they will buy you another one because whatever reason you have a retainer is a good reason to get another one right away because your parents will understand that the retainer you need and it is very important so they will automatically buy you a new one.

GOD... the retainer nightmare! I lost and broke a total of three...20 years ago!
Get a ride to the dentist... set up a PAY plan with them and bring $50.00 of your savings for a down... I bet they even make you a good deal cause of your worries!..Maybe!

these things really happen but nobody really wants to be in this tight situation intentionally... anyway best way to do is to level with them and tell them the truth, offer to pay it either by using some of ur savings or paying them by doing some extra housework .. dont worry, they will get angry but they will understand that you are sorry about it.. good luck..

Try telling the truth, be honest...depending on their reaction, then offer to pay for it. It was an accident, I can't imagine they would take your money.

Being a mo, I would understand,, when I was a kid I did the same thing. Don't be scared, just honest

Take responsibility...or be looked upon as irresponsible for a long time.

actually, earlier you do, seek for that plastic bag that the souvenirs you got on the park got here in. Your invisalign became in there, wrapped in a tissue. it would nevertheless be next on your table, except your mom threw it out.
