Does anyone have an effective method of blocking Intstant Messengers from being used in a LAN?

What about on a server or firewall level blockout?

if you use a standard build for your LAN desktops, ie you install the client OS from an image, you can just disable the windows preinstalled IM software, like Windows Messenger, and prevent your users from installing any software.

Thats one way to do it, so when you deploy any new machine to your LAN you won't have to worry about it.

Also you can then set rules on your routers to block outgoing traffic through certain ports and to certain IP addresses, if you know which ones.

I love love love the Linksys RV042. It has very nice features for blocking services, IPs, and sites by name

Just look up the name of the servers that process the IM and block them.

You can have ur firewall block certain IP's but you would need to know the serving IP in order to block it.
