To be fair, jazz just isn't as accessible as pop music. I didn't get into jazz until after I started to learn to play an instrument. Once I had a better understanding of melody, harmony, and had a stronger ear I became much more interested in Jazz.

To tell you the truth...I don't know! But in my opinion, there's not too many classy people out here, and the younger generation
(18-25) aren't really listening to the words of songs but rather the beat...I'm 22, from the younger generation but the difference between me and many of the other younger people is that I've been taught to appreciate real music, not many young people have been taught that...I like jazz...a lot, but can't seem to get the artists names...I hate that, but anyway, I do know of Sade and Anita Baker...the others I don't know their names, but I love the music mostly...especially the bass!
Then there are some younger people who are into the neo-soul type of music (I'm one of those people), which has a lot of meaning to it and doesn't wear out how much money they have as opposed to rap music...to me rap music is over-rated and is a repetition, the only difference is the different types of vocal tones of the rappers but they all talk about the same thing...which gets tired after a while...well back on topic...
Jazz just isn't recognized by many younger people because maybe it's a maturity thing...I really don't know.

Because jazz has an old stigma attached to it. Whatever is popular is what the kids want to hear and jazz is what Mom and Pop listen to and the music business always aims at the lowest common denominator that is the youth market. Even so there's always a Fiona Apple or Alicia Keys that manages to slip in there so maybe it just has to reinvent itself.

because people are brainwashed by mtv. i actually had someone on here tell me that the guy from Panic at the Disco was a better bass player than JACO F*CKING PASTORIUS! i almost went on a random killing spree.
anyway- big ups to you for listening to jazz (if, in fact, you do) check out Jacob Fred Jazz Oddyssey (jfjo.com)- these guys are nuts. also, The Bad Plus, Critters Buggin, and Skerik's Syncopated Taint Septet. they all seem to attract crowds of young people, at least here in seattle.

Haven't you heard of smooth jazz? (if you want to call that jazz).
Real, straignt-ahead jazz is never going to appeal to the masses because it's to complex for the common ear.

Because good music doesn't "sell" these days. Mainstream is all about bling bling, booties, crappy rock bands, and reality TV crap.
