Basically, dry ice is frozen carbon dioxide (CO2). CO2 is usually found as a gas -- it's what we exhale. To make dry ice, CO2 is compressed, and it liquefies at a pressure of approximately 870 pounds per square inch. The dry ice press then reduces the pressure, and part of the liquid CO2 sublimates (meaning it turns from a solid into a gas). The remaining liquid freezes into flakes that are compacted into solid blocks. The resulting dry ice is denser, heavier, and colder than ice made from water.

Carbon dioxide is an atmospheric gas comprised of one carbon and two oxygen atoms. A very widely known chemical compound, it is often referred to by its formula CO2. It is present in the Earth's atmosphere at a low concentration and acts as a greenhouse gas. In its solid state, it is called dry ice. It is a major component of the carbon cycle.

Dry ice is frozen carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide has a lower melting point than water so it is colder than ice and is often used to pack frozen items for shipping and so on. (Carbon dioxide sublimes, goes straight from a gas to a solid and vice versa which is why it freezes).

Carbon dioxide in the solid state.
It should be noted that dry ice sublimes to become carbon dioxide and vice versa without going through the liquid phase.

carbon dioxide
carbon dioxide sublimes meaning it either goes from gas --> solid or solid --> gas skipping the liquid stage.
dry ice is solid carbon dioxide. unlike normal ice, dry ice does not melt into a liquid but merely sublimes straight into a vapour so there isnt much of a mess to clean up afterwards :)

Solid carbon dioxide. The solid sublimes (goes directly to gas) at atmospheric pressure. Hence the dry!

dry ice - solidified carbon dioxide; dry ice sublimates at -78.5 C and is used mainly as a refrigerant
Solid carbon dioxide used as a refrigerating agent and also (theat) for creating special effects.
