come on have you never seen Fresh prince of Belaire?? carlton?
okay, I know corny corny but I could not resist.
I think that for the most part, black people are a lot more prtective of their race and culture, because for the most part they still hold tightly to the wounds of slavery and oppression, it is almost like a betrayal or being disloyal to their people by including any culture or race in their arts or lifestyle besides their own. This is not to say ALL black people are like this, but I find this to be the attitude of those that do. There are some white people like this too but I think a greater majority of black people feel this way or at least subconsciously they do.

I'm black and I LOVE many white artist. I don't limit myself when it comes to music. Actually, the best soul music that I have heard lately has been from white artist.
Speaking from experience, I know that some blacks tend to look down on other blacks who like white artist. This causes some blacks not even bother with white artist as an option. Peer pressure is a powerful thing. As I don't give a crap what other think about me, I endure the negativity as I listen to what I please.

Why do you refer the "black people's music" as "black music" and the "white people's music" as "white artists"???.... just curious because, they all are MUSICAL ARTISTS as I am sure you are well aware of.... and...
Don't generalize all in this way... it's more like SOME white people like black musical artists and SOME black people do like white musical artists.... I happen to be one of them... (and please, no I am not an Oreo so haters do not start with any of that) as much as I adore my R&B/Hip Hop/Rap... Alternative rock music, was my first love.
Also as open as I am about my diversity, within music and among other things as well (different friends, movies etc.) there are some black people who, in secret, do listen to white musical artists, but are afraid that if they express that liking, it will make them seem as though they are less of a race that they are. Personally, I don't give a damn what kind of music I like, it's music. It doesn't define who I am and I know what race I am. Some people don't see it that way.
Oh, and one other thing. Some white people, do listen to black musical artists, but they only do it because they think it's the "Hip" thing to do. Notice, some of the white people who listen to black musical artists, I'm hitting mostly at Rap here, they don't even know the words to the songs. They're only listening to it, to make themselves look better and cooler....

I think people listen to and dance to whatever music is popular at the time. I like a variety of music, and sometimes I don't even know the nationality of the person until I see a video or something. It used to be black music was R&B and "white" music was rock n roll or even country. I think the lined is blurred now, and that's a good thing!!

I don't think it's so much about black or white as to what you listen to. I think it's more about what you hear and feel in the words and melody of the music. I like everything from the Beach Boys to AC/ DC, Alice Cooper and The Drifters and Marvin Gaye and Barry White. I'm a big concert goer and I see people of all races at all different types of music venues. It's what you hear and can relate to in the words of the song.
When it comes to club music, I personally think that the soul sound has a better rhythm and beat to dance to. It MAKES you want to get up and move.

I really don't know what kind of truthful answer you're lookiing for because I believe that people on here can only give you "their own" truthful opinion regrading themselves.
I, for one, think it's a "tone deaf" thing with the lyrics and high powered fast guitars vs. laid back bass and drum beats which on each end can turn someone off.
Music is universal and I believe that some people secretly love certain kinds of music yet are probably afraid to admit it to their peers hence, not wanting to be an outcast.
Overall, I can honestly speak for myself when I tell you that I love music of all nationalities, cultures and races.
As a matter of fact, I sometimes believe I was switched at birth because I can give you the lyrics to any Billy Idol, KISS, Journey, Good Charlotte, Queen, Savage Garden, STYX, Lynard Skynard, Adam Ant, Pink Floyd, The Cars, etc.... song faster than I can give you lyrics to any JayZ, Twista, Nelly, Brandy, Kid & Play, Salt & Pepper, Missy Elliott, Tupac, KC & JoJo, Boys To Men, Run DMC, Patti Labelle, Karen White, etc... song.
Go ahead.... try me.

It's all about appreciating the variety. I know of quite a few "black people" who like white artists.
Tough call to generalize, seems like there's always exceptions to everything.
My wife and I are both older and are classified (unwilling) as "white" but we both like rap and hip hop. Black Eyed Peas are awesome a Fergie is a major babe.
If it wasn't for "black" music, I don't think rock and roll would be near as awesome as it was and still is.
Thanks for reading the ramblings of an old man.

I never knew MUSIC could be black or white!?! I love a lot of different music- a lot!
What gets called white music today (classic rock, or country maybe?-don't say pop because there are plenty of black artists doing that.) has its roots in "black" music. Almost all of the pioneers of Rock and Roll were black...forget the reference to country...the roots there are old ethnic Irish songs. (which I also love)
Maybe the "white" song that was played at the club you were at was just crappy.

From my own experience that is not a true statement. Most of my friends who aare black listen to top 40 which is a mixture of songs as well as R & B and hip hop. And most of them can't stand rap!
