It was not because of Columbus. It was a basic need to conquer more areas, mainly for the natural resources there that could be used as commodities. It was also curiosity of new trade routes that brought many to the America's and once discovered with its vast abundance of resources, different countries were interested in settling the new land. It comes down to what everything else in the world comes down to $$$$$$$ and prosperity. Europeans wanted to come here to settle because land in Europe was quickly becoming a sacristy and this new land provided many with the opportunity to own their own land, which they would not have the chance to in Europe.

When Columbus returned from his first trip to the West Indies, and cried- "Thars GOLD in them hills!. -It's been downhill for the Native Americans ever since.

Or when the Vikings found the NE and started to settle.
European interest in america were do to expanding empires.
