The cheyenne are from the southern Michigan, northern Indiana and Illinois area as of the 1500's. They were originally agriculture based society. They migrated west to the plains. They became one of the most feared of the Plains tribes and were known for their warrior culture and their "dog soldiers". They played a small but lethal part in the Battle of the Little Big Horn in June 1876 in which 268 men of the 7th Cavalry were killed. This was the last major battle of the Plains Indian wars. Their marriage ceremonies were: the bride was placed on a blanket and carried to the tepee of her husband's parents, there the newlyweds stayed until they could get their own teepee. They also had a polygamist society due the facts that inter-tribal raids and the buffalo hunts caused many deaths to the male population, leaving the women outnumbering the men. Plus, the women had so much work to do, they often appreciated the help of another wife/wives.
