1. The smallest country of the world, Vatican City, has a total area of 0.2 square miles. It is home to 770 people and surrounds St. Peter's Basilica, the world's spiritual center for the Roman Catholics.
2. Monaco is the world's second smallest country. It's 0.7 square miles are home to over 30,000 people.
3. The third smallest country of the world is Nauru. It is a Pacific island which 10,000 people call home. Nauru became independent in 1968 and before that was known as Pleasant Island.
4. Tuvalu is the fourth smallest country of the world. In 1978 Tuvalu gained independence and now is home to 9,700.
5. San Mario, the oldest state in Europe, is also the fifth smallest country of the world. This small country is located on Mt. Titano and has 25,000 residents.

The smallest 'state' with a representative, but not a seat, at the United Nations is the Military Order of the Knights of St John of Malta. Their 'territory' consists of a couple of buildings in Italy & some agricultural land. They dont issue bank notes etc but do issue Diplomatic Passports so I guess this makes them the smallest country as to the other 4 see previous answers & search Google for a 'breakaway' republic in the Florida Keys. You can buy passports etc from them. I went there once but was too wasted to remember any details except the beech & the insides of a toilet bowl.
