I think their cousins, but they are not the same. Gophers tend to be more solitary, while Prairie Dogs live in large groups.

The prairie dog is a somewhat larger than the gopher and does not have a black tipped tail like the gopher. The proper name for the gopher is Richardson Ground Squirril. As far as I know they don't share the same range. I don't know much about the prairie dog other than having seen them in a zoo.

No they are not the same. Though both are rodents and both are burrowing animals. Prairie dogs hence their name lives in the grassland and lives in colonies. Gophers are loners and are considered pest because they will appear in vegetable gardens and eat the roots of the plants.
