Well...i've been playing for a few months now...and all i've really been doing is playing other people's music..and doing a few scales. I'm just wondering what I should be doing to get on a path that would eventually lead me to writing my own music.

i'm a gutar teacher man.... theres no right or wrong path, its all about figuring out how you learn, and taking that path. but, learning chords and scales, and understanding their structures is always helpful, and will make it a lot easier to understand your options when trying to create your own song. take the things you've learned from your heros and try to integrate your favorite stuff into the music you create, but dont just copy them, make sure you're still being you.

as far as creating your own music..... hard to say. i come up with stuff by just sitting down and noodling. the other guitar player in my band doesnt really do it like that. he sits down and thinks "ok, time to write a song" and tries to write something a certain way. we both seem equally successful at coming up with stuff we're happy with.just do what seems right for you, try things and follow your gut. good luck man!

if you have any specific guitar playing questions, give me a shout.

Take music lessons. I picked the guitar up last year and am still learning. I'm nearly fifty. I wish I had the desire to do it when I was younger but hey, it's never to late to try anything. Once you learn the chords, only then can you start making you own music. Be adveturous and try your best. Good luck to you.

I'm learning to play the guitar also. My uncle plays professionally and he said that it's always best to teach yourself. He told me to learn the chords first and the gift to write your own would come soon after.

One way I've used is to learn a new chord and try to write a progression around it.
