JD Powers & Assoc just released their study on dependability (reliability) of vehicles on the road for 3 years
the top 5 manufacturers(in order)

Lexus
Mercury
Buick
Cadillac
Toyota

the list goes on
I'll give you the 5 LEAST reliable (worst listed last)

Hummer
Kia
Suzuki
Saab
Land Rover

btw the link in Chris K's answer (just before my answer) is from last years (2005) study.
That study was of model year 2002 & also a 3 yr study

My answer came from the 2006 study of model year 2003 & is the most recent.

Lexus spends the least amount of time in the shops. followed by porche and lincoln. As far as dependability, it is based on the number of problems per 100 vehicles:
#1) Lexus139 (which means that in the first 3 years of ownership, a lexus would only have 1.39 problems)
#2) Porsche149
#3) Lincoln151
#4) Buick163
#5) Cadillac175
Infiniti178
Toyota194
Mercury195
Honda201
Acura203
BMW225
Ford231
Chevrolet232
Chrysler235
Industry Average237
Saturn240
Oldsmobile*242
GMC245
Pontiac245
Mazda252
Hyundai260
Subaru260
Volvo266
Jaguar268
Dodge273
Nissan275
Mitsubishi278
Mercedes-Benz283
Saab286
Jeep289
Suzuki292
Audi312
Daewoo*318
Isuzu331
Volkswagen335
Mini383
Land Rover395
Kia397
So the moral, don't buy a KIA.

My wife and I drive Nissans.

We bought a '94 Altima for her almost 10 years ago and the car has been nearly bulletproof. I am a 35+ year mechanic and it's one of the best purchases I have ever been involved in (because I don't have to work on it on my days off!). Last year I bought an '03 Frontier pickup and it is a solid vehicle..never fails to answer the call.

We will be selling the Altima next year, and probably will buy an Infiniti G-35.

I have worked on Hondas and Toyotas for the past 20 years, and I'm not sold on either marque..What does that tell you?

Worst automobile ever became the oldsmobile cutlass cierra. It became a sprint **** and a nil.5!! each week it had a sparkling subject AND the previous problems might return. i eventually offered it for $500 funds. while the guy reported how approximately $4 hundred and that i reported ok, he might desire to have have been given a clue!! LOL
