For a long time, the U.S. (or, rather, Southern California) was the only place where films could be made year-round. Early films were shot outdoors, with light fabrics overhead to disperse sunlight and create shadowless lighting. The financial success of a production thus heavily depended on the number of warm sunny days in a year.
Liberal immigration policies also helped. A lot of talent was imported from Europe.

Free time and money! Movie studios wouldn´t be making movies that cost thousands of dollars if wasn´t a business for them. All the things that you mentioned are activities people enjoy durng their leissure time. And Americans have a lot of leissure time compared to other countries. But thats not all, they also have the money to use in their leissure time. So money and free time equals spending on entertainment. If people are demanding more entertainment, why not give it to them!
Once they give that entertainment to americans, where is the harm in trying to get some more money and offering it to other countries.

English is the "lengua franca" or however it is spelled, that is the language of trade in the world. I believe that we are the most populous english speaking nation and if that is true it is only natural for us to dominate the entertainment industry of the world.
