The role of women DID change in the 1950s. After the war, women who had worked in the factories, and served in the armies, had no intention of stepping back into the 'little wife' role. They remained in the work force in increasing numbers. They breached the career barrier in many trades and professions. They got the vote (Yes! in the 1940s some women still were not able to vote) and universal sufferage was a HUGE step forward. That meant the political parties had to court them, and recognize that they were real people too.
The role of women continues to change today, but asking how we could have changed the role of women in the 1950s must raise the question, what do you think the role of women in the 1950s was?

We could have encouraged more women to go to medical school to become Ob/gynecologists and family physicians.
If women in the 1950's had been going to female doctors, they never would have been prescribed all the diet pills and tranquilizers that male doctors handed out like candy. They would have reached the decision to create birth control long before the 1970's and the female dotcors would have been great examples to women everywhere about other options besides being a housewife.
The ERA would have passed the first time it was suggested and maybe the wave of women's coming into their own power would have spread around the world by now and it would have reached such great numbers that the Taliban and all other opporessors of women globally, would have been ousted from power long ago, and we would not be in this global melt down.
By the way, I believe that the Islamic Jihad is 100% about islamic men being pissed off that their women might be catching on to the fact that they don't have to be door mats for men. These desperate men are willing to kill to keep control over "thier women", as if they were nothing more than breeding cattle.
