each hard drive is speced to run for a certain number of hours and a certain number of read/writes, most hdd's for HOME use are capable of lasting for 3-5 years if not longer. Server HHD's are only expected to last about 1-3 years because of the heavy use of the drive.

It all depends on a lot of factors... The type, how often its used, the temperature... Its hard to determine but they usually last a couple years.
