For uploading photos you can use the web-interface or download a small program called the flickr Uploadr
while uploading photos you can put all the uploaded photos in a set (photo album) and share this url with your friends
Also it has good privacy options - you can designate people as friends/family and choose which photos are seen by people in one group but invisible to the other group or make a few photos invisible to both

picasaweb.google.com has an excellent photo album with 30 MB free space and nice slideshow option too.
