A theory is something that has been proven according to the steps in the scientific method. A hypothesis is something that needs to be proven prior to becoming a theory.

A hypothesis is just a statement about the universe. A scientific experiment takes a hypothesis and tries to determine if it's true. If you hypothesis is, "Water freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit," then you can test it with a bottle of water, a freezer, and a thermometer. A hypothesis that can't be tested somehow isn't a very good hypothesis. If a hypothesis gets tested enough times and always comes up true, then it's probably a fact; if it comes up false, then you either did the experiment wrong, or you need to change your hypothesis.

A theory is an explanation for a lot of different facts. The theory of relativity, for instance, explains a lot of stuff about light, and gravity, and planets. A theory will also imply a lot of hypotheses, and if those hypotheses can be tested, then the theory is sound. If those hypotheses don't pan out, then the theory needs to be changed to explain it.

A hypothesis is an idea that is able to be tested and data recorded. An example of a hypothesis would be to say that I think you will get 30 answers to this question. To test this I would have to check back when the question is closed and see how many answers were posted, and record the data to prove whether my idea was right or wrong.

A theory is a tested hypothesis that proved to be true. In other words, an idea that has logical and tested support for it. An example of a theory would be plate tectonics. (The idea that the earth is made up of large moving plates that float on the lithosphere)

A theory does not have as much support as a law does. A n example of a law would be the laws of gravity.
