Cubic feet is a unit for 3-D objects. A wooden log of 1 feet length, 1 feet breadth and 1 feet of depth is 1 cubic feet. Normally wood is measured using this unit. In South India, this unit is referred as "1 kuzhi" means the same that of 1 cubic feet.

Cubic feet represent the length * width * height where each is measured in feet.
For instance. Let's pretend a 2x4 is actually 2 inches by 4 inches, though we know they are planed to smaller measurements. In that case a single 8 foot two by four would be:
1/6 * 1/3 * 8 = 8/18 = 4/9 of a cubic foot
2 inches is 1/6th of a foot
4 inches is 1/3rd of a foot
Not a great example, but it should get you started

One cubic foot is essentially a square that is 1 foot long, 1 foot wide, and 1 foot tall. If you have a solid piece of wood, you can measure the volume in cubic feet by multiplying lxwxh, which should just be s^3, (s=length of side), where the sides are equal in length.
I would imagine that most wood is not so big that it would be practical to measure the volume through it's dimensions. An alternative route would be to determin the average density of the wood (mass/volume). This way, through simply weighing the wood, you would know the mass and thus be able to calculate the volume.

in short a cubic measurment for any item is the dimensions of the all sides (the 3D) so measure its height*width*depth so for example a one cubic foot is 1foot *1*1Foot, and a two cubic foot block would or could be 2*1*1 for example.
in its simplest terms. I'm sure some maths genius will come and tell me i made an error somewhere but hey i got a piss poor education. so good luck.
you may like to go to the microsoft website (if you are using a microsoft operating system genuine copy) as you can browse and find the calculator plus that does mathematical conversitions for you if you need it. hey but you only asked how to measure it, so as i said before measure the 3 dimensions and then multiply them together to get your answer, for a square foot you would only measure the two dimesions then multiply. i hope that helps

A cubic foot is an Imperial / U.S. customary (non-metric) unit of volume, used in both the United States and the UK. It is defined as the volume of a cube with sides of 1 foot (0.3048 metres) in length.
There is no universally agreed symbol but the following are used:
cubic feet, cubic foot, cubic ft
cu ft, cu feet, cu foot
ft³, feet³, foot³
feet^3, foot^3, ft^3
feet/-3, foot/-3, ft/-3
1 cubic foot is equivalent to:
1728 cubic inches
≈ 0.037 cubic yards (exactly: 1/27)
≈ 0.803563913 U.S. bushels
7.480519480519 U.S. liquid gallons (exactly: 1728/231)
≈ 0.178107606679 crude barrels
28.316846592 litres
0.028316846592 cubic metres

Cubic feet is a unit of volume (length x breadth x height - all measured in feet ) in F P S system of measurement.
Technically speaking, there is a difference between wood and timber. Wood is the product of trees acquired in a natural way whereas timber is a product processed from wood and marketed in a regular geometric shape for use in engineering works as well as furniture. Every wood is not timber but every timber is made out of wood.
Thus, wood does not have any regular shape (length, breadth & height) and hence its volume in cft (cubic feet) is measured in two ways:
(a) Directly by measuring the average peimeter of the log and its length in ft. From the perimeter the cross sectional area is calculated and multiplied by the lengh gives the volume. This is used in case of heavy logs of wood in a reasonably regular shape.
(b) Indirectly by taking its wieght in lbs (pounds). If we know or find out the density of the wood in lbs per cft, its volume can be calculated. This is used in case of small peices of woods.
However, volume of a timber is calculated by measuring its length, breadth & height in ft. and multiplying the three.
