1. 3 units to the left of the y axis is going to be -3 (the x coordinate). 4 units above the x axis is going to be +4 (the y coordinate). so (x,y) = (-3, 4)

2) 8 units below the x axis. so the y coordinate is -8. 4 units to the right of the y axis...that's +4, x coordinate. so it is (4, -8)

hope this is making sense to u.. .picture it, or better yet just draw a graph and find the points.

3) 5 below the x axis is going to be -5 y coordinate. if they are equal, i guess it's (-5,-5)

4) on the x axis. so the y coordinate is 0. x coordinate is 12 to the left, so -12. (-12,0).

tada~~! :)

You can think of the axes as number lines that include negative numbers, zero, and positive numbers. The x axis is horizontal, and the y-axis is vertical.

The point where the x-axis intersects the y-axis is called the origin, and has the coordinates (0,0).

The x coordinate describes the leftness/rightness of a point. Any point right of the y-axis will have a positive x. Any point left of the y-axis will have a negative x. Any point that is directly on the y-axis will have 0 for its x value.

The y coordinate describes the up/down-ness of a point. Any point above the x-axis has a positive y. Any point below the x-axis has a negative y. Any point on the x-axis has a y value of zero.

To determine the coordinates, just plot them and then look at their left/right and up/down positions.

So, for the 1st question, the point is 3 left of the y-axis. That means an x coordinate of -3. It is also 4 units above the x-axis. That means a y coordinate of positive 4. So your point will be (-3, 4).

I think you can get the rest from there.

ok look first u need to get graph paper and draw a coordinate plane.
the x-axis is the horizontal line going across left to right and the y-axis is the vertical line going up and down.
#1-read it carefully. the point is located THREE units to the left of the y-axis... move to the left of that vertical line 3 units. and from that point you move FOUR units above the horizontal line..
*it's pretty hard to explain through the internet but try your best and just Ask Your Teacher.. don*t be afraid to ask questions.. if your teacher doesn't like questions being asked.. then THAT TEACHER IS A BAD TEACHER trust me. :) Good Luck! :D
