Commuting with faceless people has two distinct advantages.
First you are in your own world, and have time for yourself even within a crowd, because the crowd does not matter. You do not have to make conversation of anything, you have time to think, to relax, listen to your favourite music, read a few pages... It's an oasis in a hectic life.
Second, the fun of faceless people is that, if you want, you can try to make one of them have a face. If you take the same train/bus everyday, then you will see the same people, if not everyday, at least quite regularly. So it's a chance to know new people who need not have anything in common with you except that you take the same mode of transport.
In terms of web chats, the advantage is that you are really faceless yourself. When you commute, you are not necessarily faceless, someone might be trying to give you a face, watching you... But on a web chat you are anonymous for the most part. You can be yourself and not bother about too many social restrictions. It's a place where you an remove your corset and let your flab hang loose.
Furthermore you can easily assume an identity other than yours, have a fantasy, remove your corset and build yourself instant muscles or large breasts or whatever tickles you.
In real life you'd soon be found out, in web chats you can live that life you want choose, however temporarily.

There are some bizarre answers here, I assume you mean "communicating" rather than "commuting".
That said, I think there are obvious attractions:
1. We are likely to be less inhibited if we are not getting any immediate feedback (e.g. disapproving facial expressions). This also explains why people prefer e-mail to talking on the phone - especially when the communication is about a sensitive issue! We feel happier to express ourselves freely.
2. We can pretend to be someone we are not and tell as many fibs as we like. We are not judged on any kind of visible features.
3. You can do and say whatever you like without fear of reprisal - dating chatlines are potentially appealing as you can flirt to your heart's content in the knowledge that things cannot get dangerously out of hand. You stay in complete control of the situation.

When commuting with this chat group you don`t need to have a face because we don`t chat with the people on it. We can get a opinion on what the person says and how they approach a question when answering it.

I'm guessing you meant to say "communicating" because most people I commute with, I wish were "faceless". Communicating w/faceless people is awesome in that it's completely consequentless. You can say the wildest shyte and getaway with it. Inhibitions are more obliterated than with alcohol

because we are faceless ourselves. we cannot be judged by our looks, we can't be judged by what we do for a living, how old we are and what our income status is. for once....we are just personalities. and we can be liked for just that. or we can express ourselves with full freedom. and when you come across someone that is offensive, guess what....with a right click on the x at the top of the screen, that person goes away.

Communication is a combination of words, tone of voice, body language, and physical appearances. In chat rooms we only get words. We then start to imagine what the person looks like, the tone they are using and what body laguage they are giving off. We see what we want to see. In 99% of the time, our interpreations of who people are in chat rooms are dead wrong. They become what we want them to be, our ideal mate or friend.

I find myself getting emotionally involved with people...on YA I can't get involved with people I can't see...will never know....and frankly don't usually care about. 99% of the time I don't even look at the avatar.
