Ok, I know the answer, 10pts if you know why the NY Islanders where brough into the NHL back in the 70's. It did not happen just for fun or because NY is a huge city.

The Islanders were put on Long Island to prevent the WHA from putting a team at that location. The WHA was very close to placing a team there.

The NHL would not, at that time, have put another team so close to the Rangers franchise location, were it not for the WHA threat.

The Islanders were put on Long Island to prevent the WHA from placing a team at that location. The WHA was very close to placing a team there. Basically, the NHL wanted to screw up the WHA's plans.

The threat of the WHA placing a team in NYC pretty much forced the NHL to allow an expansion team there.

Likely that Ray Boe would have placed a team with WHA if the NHL did not move first. He owned the NETS of the ABA ( rival of the NBA ).

Same reason SoCal has two teams--population base. Hell, it's actually 3 teams if you are talking about greater NY with NJ just across the river.

What does "Original Six" have to do with anything? Montreal used to have three teams--Maroons and Wanderers with the Habs.

New York actually has 3 teams Islanders, Rangers & the Buffalo Sabres! New York City however has 2 teams and it is a huge market that can support the two businesses!

To dissuade the WHA from placing a team in the new Nassau County Coliseum as well as the New York market.

The Islanders aren't in the city, and the metropolitan NY area actually supports three teams (Rangers, Islanders, Devils).

Because the market was there for a second team, and there was the population to support it.

Anyway, the Islanders aren't from NYC - they're from Long Island. It's a different population that visits the teams.

Why does it have 2 baseball teams? A lot of places have more than one of the same sports teams. Look at California.
