I think greed should be understand as an excess of ambition.
A certain degree of ambition is needed in order to prosper in the real world, and that is a positive contribution; but when that ambition turns into greed it will bring unhappiness, and that will out-weight sooner or later any good.

greed makes people powerful, yes... but to the common flock, suffer. this is what drives a person to be a politician, or a town leader... greed is the source of vileness and corruption. it makes a person selfish, senseless and cruel... and that, my friend, is the most evil thing a human can ever have as a trait. and in a way, we can easily denote a person's character if he can be trusted with such responsibility...
