Because the myth and legend of the Genoese merchant known as Cristobal Colon has superseded the truth and it's too late to change what's already been done since it's now ingrained in our culture. It's not going to stop Columbus Day sales just as supermarkets aren't going replace turkeys with eel pie during Thanksgiving.

BTW, FYI... The Greeks knew the Earth was round long before Columbus was around. It was just forgotten during the Dark Ages and the Europeans had to rediscover the Earth was round again centuries later. ;)

Because he was the first to document it and do it in a modern world. Vikings a long time before him went to America, as also some african, from the east.

But I think that Christopher Columbus got credit because his was his first expedition in a more 'sophisticated' world, and probably because he proved that the earth was round. Again, it was not first his idea, I think that some greece philosopher also said so before his time. But CC proved it.
