In Canada, we have different laws, depending on which province you live in....here in BC, its fine to tape a conversation as long as one of the parties knows its being recorded..

It varies by state.
In NY, at least one person present must be aware of the recording.
In other words, it is always OK record your own conversations.
But it is not OK to record a conversation between two other people (if neither are aware of the recording).
Likewise, you may not hide a recording device, leave, and return to hear what was recorded.
In most other states, all parties being recorded must be aware of the recording. Usually, the recording device is required to sound a beep or tone every few seconds to alert the speakers to the recording.

It depends on the situation but generally in most all states of this union you need only to be a party in the conversation for it to be legal to record their conversation without the others knowledge but, you needn't say anything just so long as the communication was made in your presence. Nevertheless, eavesdropping i.e., recording others conversations that you are not a party to, regardless if they are about you are illegal.
If you had included your state the info would be more specific rather than general. Email me your state and i'll gladly provide it.

Nevada is an 'all get mutually' consent state - "Twelve states at present require that each and each one activities consent to the recording. those states are: California[15] Connecticut Florida[16] Illinois (debated, see next section) Maryland[17] Massachusetts Michigan Montana [18] (calls for notification in simple terms) Nevada ,,,,,," confer with the law enforcement officials.

It's more UNETHICAL than illegal
Yet, even if you do have that as evidence, you can't use it in a courtroom. If the person being recorded has not given consent or approval to record them, the recording will be ruled out of the court's consideration
Still shouldn't be done, though

This will depend on the laws in your jurisdiction. It might be perfectly ok in some places, but it is definitely a criminal offense in others and probably makes you liable to being sued in several more. You should try to research the statutes in your State.

I think so. From watching People's Court I know that in some states it is illegal, but I am not sure which ones.

In Alberta it's also legal if one of the parties knows the conversation is being recorded.
Why do you want to know? Are you up to no good?
