Is there a way to remove persistent carpet stains, besides carpet cleaners?

I've rented carpet cleaners and used the spot remover chemical. The stains keep coming back after the carpet dries.

One stain might be bicycle chain lubricant.

I've seen special cleaning equipment at the store, priced at approx $150 - any idea if it has a better chance?

If it is lubricant you should use a degreaser. I used to clean carpets for a living and most of the stuff you get retail is junk for stains. Try and find a janitorial supply in your area. If you don't want to go to that length, try Dawn dish detergent first. Put it on straight and work it with a good stiff brush over an area about two to three times the size of the stain. This should prevent a "clean" spot appearing after you are done. You will have to rinse and dry it well afterward. The best thing to do is get a "Rug Doctor". You can rent them at a lot of grocery stores for around $30.00(? It's been a while since I've done it) and they do work pretty well. Treat the stain as I described then shampoo the entire rug. Ive used this method many times and most stains will come out unless they have been there too long.

What colour is the carpet?

When we moved into our house there was a very dark brown stain in the middle of the pink carpet. We'd had the carpets cleaned but it remained.

I got some bleach and a pink Chux (I don't know whether you have this product where you are but it is a think cleaning cloth). The bleach removed the stain out of the carpet and the pink from the Chux was transferred to the carpet. You can now not tell at all where the stain was.

Try this:
Mix some dishwashing liquid with warm water and pour a small bit it on the spot, rub it in, cover with a dry old white towel, apply a HOT iron (steam option turned off) to the towel for several seconds (make sure you are moving the iron around on the towel). The heat from the iron draws the stain/moisture into the white towel. You may need to repeat this several times but it has always worked for me.

If it's an oil based stain, you'll need something to break down the oil, not just suck it up. Spot test a piece of rug with a dishwashing liquid and see if that discolours the rug and if not, then try it on your stain. If something more industrial is in order be sure to check an inconspicuous part of the rug before you go pouring it on.

Castrol engine cleaner should work but you should do a spot test first. Castrol can be found at Wal-Mart in the automotive section. Be careful with it because it's strong I use it to lift grease stains off of concrete, clean the oven and strip wax off floors. Oh yeah, it will strip paint also. Good luck.

Ok try this wet the area and then take some gojo hand cleaner and rub it into the stain and then vaccum it up with a good shop vac this should take it out

it might be time to dye the carpet. But first i would try goof off it is a product for gum and glue removeal. try it in a place out of view to test for color fastness.

if it is an oil stain try WD-40 then spot clean with resolve. If that doesn't work try peroxide if it is light colored carpet.

Ok, I will say it again, Woolite Heavy Traffic spray in the blue can at wal mart for 4.00 a can, just follow the instructions and scrub with a wet cloth, the best stuff. ")
