The Check Engine Light is the car's way of telling you that something that the computer monitors that is emissions related is outside of factory design parameters. The car cannot talk to you, so the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Light) has to do.
These codes are required to follow a set definition for each code, defined by a protocol identified as OBD II (On Board Diagnostics, generation 2)
Considering that the transmission is classified an "emissions related" component, I would hazard a guess that the light and slipping transmission are related.
SOOO...now it is off to Ford for diagnosis and repair, or you could go to somewhere like Autozone for a complimentary code reading and attempt to repair it yourself.

Good Luck

Check engine light could mean a number of things. One possibility is low on oil. Another would be low on engine coolant. If the transmission is slipping when it is warm the fluid needs changed. It has lost its viscosity. Unfortunately when they start slipping it is usually too late to do anything about it besides have it rebuilt!

A check engine light could be absolutely anything, and it could have nothing to do with the tranny. Plug it into a computer so it can download the codes that triggered the light.

You will need to replace the transmission (or have it rebuilt). Check your fuel cap to be sure it is on properly-- this may be why the engine light is on. It could also be a # of things-- take it to the local shop and have them hook it up to the diagnostic computer.

whatever the transmission problem is..it will have to be fixed...call some garages that do trasmission work and ask if they give a free estimate for the work thats needs to be done...someone in your area should do it for free or close to it...find out whats wrong with your car and how much it is going to be to fix it...then call around again to get the lowest estimate...good luck I hope your find a good garage..or maybe ask your family for a good one..:)
