i am stuck on this math promblem, help would be appreciated.

1)If The Ratio of boys to girls in a class is 5 to 3, which of the following could not be the # of students in the class?
a.32 b.36 c.40 d.48 e.56


2)If a tree grows 5ft in x years, what was te average rate, in inches per year, at which the tree grew during them years?
a.60x b.5/x c.5/12x d.12x/5 e.60/x

1. Since there are five boys for every three girls, that means the minimum number of students has to be at least eight. Since, the question is asking for the answer that could not be the # of students, the answer should not be a multiple of eight. So, b. 36 is the only answer.

2. The tree grows 5ft in x years. First convert 5ft to inches using the conversion of 12 inches = 1ft. 5ft equals to 60 inches. The question is asking for the average rate of growth in x years, you divide 60 by x, and the answer is e.
